Wealthfront, an automated investment service firm for personal finance, named Big Switch to its fifth annual Career-Launching Companies list. For Big Switch, this is a big honor, especially when you dive into the origins of the list, which is compiled by Wealthfront founder and Executive Chairman, Andy Rachleff.
Andy is a professor at Stanford Graduate School of Business and he started compiling this list several years ago as a resource for his students who would ask his advice on which tech startup they should work for, since the students all had multiple offers from a plethora of startups in close proximity to the leading University. In Andy’s words “I disappoint them by recommending that they not to go work for a startup at all. I tell them three words I know are hard for them to hear: ‘You’re not ready.’ I prefer to see them take their first jobs after graduation at midsized companies with momentum, not startups, because they are the companies most likely to be big successes.”
Andy recommends that students who do want to work at a startup (or start their own company one day) begin their careers at a company like Big Switch, for two important reasons:
Opportunity received during his or her time with the company (particularly for that of an entry-level position) and, equally as important, opportunity the employee has after leaving the company.
Insight that will be gained during the employee’s time at the company, which can be invaluable and integral to his or her success in future roles.

Wealthfront’s 2017 list includes 132 companies, with only 28 of those being new to the list. To qualify for Wealthfront’s list, a company must be privately held, have a current revenue run rate between $20 million and $300 million and be on a trajectory to grow at a rate in excess of 50% over at least the next three or four years. This year they added an additional qualification: the companies must have compelling unit economics. Selling a product at very low margins can lead to rapid revenue growth, but it doesn’t necessarily imply a great long-term business. Wealthfront builds this list by surveying the partners of the following 14 venture capital firms: Accel Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, Benchmark, DAG Ventures, Greylock Partners, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Matrix Partners, Redpoint Ventures, Ribbit Capital, Sequoia Capital, Social Capital and Spark Capital.
